Austrian association of sworn and court-certified interpreters

The Austrian Association of sworn and court-certified interpreters (ÖVGD) is a non-political and non-profit-making association that has set itself the task of promoting the class and professional interests of sworn and court-certified interpreters in Austria ("court interpreters ") to represent and promote. The association was founded in 1920. The certification as a court interpreter is the main admission criterion for full association members.

The ÖVGD is in regular contact with all Austrian courts and authorities and discusses with them all questions and concerns (e.g. Expert and Interpreter Act, Fee Claims Act) that arise in connection with translation and interpreting work for courts and authorities. Information disseminated through the media on the work of court interpreters is used to improve public understanding of the contribution of professional translators and interpreters to fair trials.

The ÖVGD advises its members on fee issues and promotes their further education by holding seminars, lectures and other events.

tasks

  • Promotion of the class and professional interests of the sworn and court-certified interpreters in Austria
  • Negotiations with the competent Austrian authorities on all matters relating to court interpreters
  • Naming the examiners for the certification exams of interpreters
  • Organization of basic and advanced seminars for prospective professionals, specialist seminars and advanced training courses and discussion groups for members
  • Publication of newsletters, notifications about job-specific problems, working documents, forms, etc.
  • Arbitration body for disputes over certified translations.

Members

The ÖVGD currently (as of February 2020) has around 535 members all over Austria, who can be found in a list sorted by language on the ÖVGD website.

Any interpreter who is sworn and certified by a court in Austria can become a full member. Any person who has made special contributions to the association can become an honorary member. Supporting members can be physical and legal persons who - without meeting the requirements for admission as a full member - participate in the goals of the association and are willing to support its purposes.
