An excess length (Austria and Switzerland: error profile ) in Kilometrierung arises of railway lines when their length is changed by conversions. In order to avoid a shift in the route kilometrage, the beginning of an excess length or an error profile is marked in the data at the point where the extended track section begins.

Use in Germany

From the beginning of the excess length, the kilometrage continues with the kilometer and hectometer value from the beginning, the additional lengths are indicated by an increasing number of meters after the hectometer value and a plus sign. If the excess length begins at km 4.2 +00 (in normal notation this is km 4.200) and there is a signal on the track after 150 m, the signal is then at km 4.2 +150.

At the end of the excess length there is then a kilometer jump to the kilometer of the route that is on the original kilometer. The length of the route is increased by the excess length.

The description of the determination of missing and excessive lengths is contained in the guideline 883.0010 of the Deutsche Bahn.
