Acharya (title)

Acharya ( Sanskrit आचार्य ācārya m. , Pali Acariya ) is a title for a religious teacher ( Guru ), who are by his own behavior an example. Acharya has different meanings in Hinduism , Buddhism and Jainism .

In Hinduism, ācārya denotes a spiritual teacher who introduces the student to the Vedas . The term is also used for scribes and can be added directly to the name, like Shankaracarya ( Śaṅkarācārya ) for Shankara .

In Buddhism, ācariya denotes the spiritual teacher who introduces the student or novice to the Dhamma . In contrast, the upajjhāya / upajjhāyaka instructs the disciple in Vinaya (the rules of the order ).

The chief spiritual teacher of the Buddhist order Arya Maitreya Mandala bears the title Acharya.
