Ōryōki

Ōryōki ( Japanese応 量器) or Hatsutara ( Japanese鉢 多 羅; Sanskrit Pātra) is a contemplative , stylized form of eating together. It comes from the tradition of the Zen monasteries. Ōryōki can be translated as "appropriate to the occasion". In addition to the monastic context, this form of meditation is also practiced during sesshin or retreats .

The ritual protocol precisely defines every device and every action before, during and after the meal. There is silence during the meal. Participants are encouraged to eat with complete mindfulness .
