Retreat, English for withdrawal , describes a planned spiritual rest or withdrawal from the familiar environment. While the term is also generally used in English for phases of relaxation or stress relief, the meaning of a spiritual practice has established itself in the German-speaking area. This corresponds originally to Christian retreats and generalized: It is often connected with a concept of meditation , for example at Buddhist events or other spiritual traditions from the Asian region, which have often settled in Europe via the USA .

In many schools, a retreat follows a fixed program that is tailored to the duration, e.g. B. can range from a week to several months. The daily routine is largely regulated, which can also include eating, washing or work phases. But also a longer stay in a temple or abroad, which is connected with spiritual practice and can last up to several years, is sometimes called a retreat in the figurative sense . Recently, under the heading “relaxation therapy”, seminars and qualifications for therapists who have no religious reference have been offered.

In modern yoga , the term retreat is understood as a kind of vacation. Here, too, it is about withdrawing from everyday life, for a few days (weekend retreat) up to weeks, the goal is to let go of the familiar, which can be easier with concentrating on yoga practice than just pure meditative exercises. Often retreats are offered as trips with an organized stay at home and abroad. In the corporate context, a joint company vacation that is connected to strategy meetings, workshops or other work units is also referred to as a retreat.

In the natural sciences , the term retreat (often also "scientific retreat") is also used as Anglicism and describes a meeting of a scientific group lasting several days, in which social activities play a role in addition to scientific exchange. The aim is to get to know each other in a different atmosphere and thus promote interaction in everyday scientific life.
