In a music competition that took place in Izmir in 1982, Şehrîbana Kurdî defeated her 35 opponents and became the winner of the competition.

This competition was in the folk music category , where she sang the song "Ben doğarken ağlamışım". In 1987 she began singing both in family circles for celebrations and at school.

She took the first step in her professional career in 1991. Her first album was “Welatême Kurdistane”, literally translated it means “My home is Kurdistan”. With the first album she had an unexpectedly great success.

One year before that, she started to learn from professional teachers in Shan classes (handling, using or exercising the voice).

During these years the Kurdish language was banned in Turkey. However, despite all the difficulties, the Kurdish singers put their albums on the market. In a very short time, the reputation and voice of Sehriban spread very quickly beyond the borders of Turkey.
