1st Symphony (Bernstein)

Leonard Bernstein composed his Symphony No. 1 , called Jeremiah , in 1942. From a formal point of view, it is more of a symphonic poem , as the work programmatically follows the biblical story of the prophet Jeremiah .

The work premiered on January 28, 1944 in the Syria Mosque , a Freemasonry building in Pittsburgh , and is dedicated to the composer's father, Samuel Bernstein.

The symphony is divided into three movements: "Prophecy" ( Eng . "Prophecy"), largamente ; “Profanation” (German “desecration”), vivace con brio and “Lamentation” (German “lament”), lento . In the third movement, a mezzo-soprano sings parts of the lamentations of Jeremiah from the Hebrew Bible .
