The 5th ring road (Chinese: 五环 路; Pinyin: Wǔhuánlù) in Beijing is both a ring road and a "border": the greater area of Beijing is located within the 5th ring road.

The 5th ring road was built between 2001 and 2003 and completely opened as a ring road on November 1, 2003; in the time before, only the northern section of the route was open.

The ring road is designed as a motorway , on which maximum speeds between 90 and 100 km / h are permitted.

Until December 31, 2003, the 5th ring road was a toll motorway. The highway has been free of charge since January 1, 2004, after many Beijing residents spoke out against the toll system.

The 5th ring road is 98 km long, so you can drive through it completely within about an hour.
