history

In 1934 construction began on the building for the Prestwick Cinema Company . The architect responsible is Alister Gladstone MacDonald , son of Ramsay MacDonald , the former Prime Minister , a specialist in cinema buildings. The building was completed the following year and operated as a Broadway Cinema . The movie theater was stopped in 1966 and the building was converted into a bingo hall. Parts of the building were idle for many years and in 2004 it was placed on the Scotland List of Listed Listed Buildings at Risk. Its condition was last described as fair in 2012.

description

The building is on Main Street ( A79 ), one of the city's major thoroughfares. The design is similar to that of the Playhouse Cinema built a year earlier . The symmetrically structured two-story entrance area with a flat roof is designed in Art Deco . Curved edges lead to the central, slightly set back entrance. Small shops are set up on the outside. Four double-leaf wooden entrance doors lead into the entrance area. They are worked with fighter windows. As with parts of the entrance area, the masonry of the event building consists of brick , which is plastered on the facades. This area closes with a gable roof . In the interior, the original furnishings have largely been preserved.
