Anti-Submarine Warfare Continuous Trail Unmanned Vessel (ACTUV) is a research project of the United States Navy and DARPA . The aim is to develop an unmanned watercraft that is able to detect and track diesel-electric submarines. A prototype was christened in April.

aims

The ACTUV program has the following 3 main objectives:

  • Testing the performance of an above-water platform from the concept to a demonstrator under the premise that a person does not have to enter the vehicle at any time during an operation. The result is a design example that places less emphasis on important points such as division, accessibility of systems, buoyancy reserves and the rooms and systems necessary for the crew. The aim is to develop a vehicle design that, as a state-of-the-art platform, has a significantly higher propulsion power than a diesel-electric submarine at a fraction of the cost.
  • Advanced autonomous systems should enable the ACTUV to carry out missions over months, largely without external control, and to cover distances of several thousand kilometers. This also includes the autonomous compliance with maritime rules, safe navigation, management of your own systems for maintaining operational readiness and autonomous reactions to intelligent opponents.
  • Demonstration of the possibilities of an ACTUV system with regard to the use of unconventional sensors and the achievement of reliable tracking of the quietest underwater targets over the entire operating period.

While the ACTUV program focuses on the demonstration of submarine tracking capabilities, the core of the platform and the autonomous systems should also be able to provide a basis for future unmanned vehicles.
