AN / UYK-20

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The AN / UYK-20 "Data Processing Set" was a robust little computer that was built by UNIVAC in the 1970s and used by the US Navy for small and medium-sized systems at sea and on land. It had non-volatile magnetic core memory and was protected by a sturdy metal case that was designed to fit through a 25-inch (63.5 cm) diameter circular hatch .

In 1972 the then Chief of Naval Material decreed that the AN / UYK-20 (V) should be used in systems that required a small processor due to the rapid increase in small types of computers in the Navy.

Both programmers and operators gave the computer the nickname "Yuck Twenty" (translated roughly "Yuck twenty").

In addition to being used in various systems throughout the fleet, the computer was also used to train data system technicians in the US Navy in the subjects of "Theory of Digital Computers" and "Application". The eight or ten week course was divided into the following subject areas:

The AN / UYK-20 is still in use, but most systems have since been replaced by its successor, the AN / UYK-44 , which has the same instruction set .
