AN / SLQ-25 Nixie
The AN / SLQ-25 Nixie is a towed decoy system against torpedoes that on warships of the US Navy and its allies used.
history
The system was developed in the 1960s and used as the AN / SLQ-25 Nixie from the 1970s . Similar systems had already been tested by the US Navy during World War II . The system was first installed as standard in the Farragut class and the Oliver Hazard Perry class . The system has since been improved and used as the AN / SLQ-25A Nixie in the 1980s .
technology
The system consists of a streamlined decoy, which contains a sound generator and is towed about 300 m behind the ship on a long, thumb-thick cable, and a signal generator on board the ship. The function of the decoy is to divert the passive sonar of the attacking torpedo from the actual target, the ship, by imitating the ship's sounds.
Usually there are two decoys on the ships that are used in pairs.
The AN / SLQ-36 Nixie versions have built-in passive sensors for locating torpedoes, sonar and noise sources and are only used by the US Navy on aircraft carriers. This version has the ability to analyze threats in order to be able to initiate suitable countermeasures.
