ASM International is a US professional association made up of technicians and engineers from the field of materials science . The association sees its purpose in promoting materials science and technology in the fields of industry, education, politics and society.

The association was founded in 1913 as the Steel Treaters Club in Detroit and initially had fewer than 20 members. The name of the association changed more frequently in the following years and in 1933 it adopted the name American Society for Metals (ASM). This name was officially shortened to ASM International in 1986 . After it was founded, the number of members grew rapidly to 1,250 in 1918 and soon thereafter 3,200 in 1921. In 1988 the number of members was 53,000 in 280 local chapters in 17 countries.
