The "Deutsche Turnerschaft Basel" was founded on August 10, 1862. At an extraordinary general assembly on July 28, 1917, the club was renamed " Arbeiterturnverein Basel-Stadt " or "ATV Basel-Stadt".
Sporting successes
The ATV Basel City was among the men in the years 1966/67 and 1971/72 Swiss champion in handball. In 1973 they also won the Swiss Cup in field handball.
The women have become Swiss champions four times to date. All four titles could be won in the 1980s.
