ATi XGP

The name ATi XGP stands for eXternal Graphics Platform and describes a technology from AMD / ATI that enables external graphics cards to be connected to laptops. This was introduced with the AMD notebook platform “Puma” .

Technical

The graphics card is connected via a specially developed interface which can offer the full bandwidth of a PCIe 16x connection. Furthermore , Crossfire on the notebook should also be possible with Lasso .

Market position

Since replaceable graphics cards in the MXM / AXIOM format never caught on, external graphics cards were developed that can be connected to a laptop via an ExpressCard connector or a specially developed connector.

First versions

First, Fujitsu Siemens launched an external ATI Mobility Radeon ™ HD 3870 ("Amilo GraphicBooster") in combination with the AMILO Sa 3650 notebook. Fujitsu Siemens uses a specially developed port for this. According to an FSC press officer, the external HD 3870 should achieve "up to 8000 points" in the 3DMark 06 benchmark program . At the end of 2009 the Acer Ferrari One 200 was also released, an 11.6 inch netbook that works together with an external ATI Mobility Radeon ™ HD 4670 ("Acer DynaVivid").
