Morning aarti on the Ganges

Aarti , also Arati, ( Hindi : आरती ) is a Hindu ritual in which the light of a candle is offered to one or more deities, but also to other entities. The aarti ritual is usually performed in the morning and / or evening and is also part of the extensive Hindu puja . Aartis is also called the songs sung during the ritual.

Aartis can take many different forms and are part of numerous Hindu ceremonies. An aarti platter with a candle or lamp, which is often fanned, and some flowers, for example, is led around a statue of a deity, while the believers sing songs in praise of the deity. The Aarti candle should take on the special quality of the deity. The plate with the candle is now presented to all those present. With their hands, they form a half-shell over the flame and then bring the palms to their foreheads, which is tantamount to a blessing.

In the popular Aarti in the Ganges (where the Ganges itself serves as a divine element), candles and flowers are placed in a boat on the Ganges; this can be done in elaborately staged ceremonies or privately. The Aartis on the Ganges have also become a tourist magnet.
