Abbazia di San Liberatore a Maiella
San Liberatore a Maiella is a former monastery in Italy. It is isolated in the municipality of Serramonacesca ( Province of Pescara ) in Abruzzo . There have been previous buildings at this point since the 9th century, but no traces have been preserved. The monastery was a priory of Montecassino , the documentary tradition is kept in the local archive.
history
The current building was built at the beginning of the 11th century. It is known as one of the most beautiful medieval architectural ensembles in Abruzzo. The 11th century campanile is the oldest in Abruzzo.
The church is a unique building whose richness and monumentality are surprising in this seclusion, and which at the same time has such a perfect regularity in floor plan and design that is seldom found in the province. The facade has been restored several times. The windows were not made until the 16th century. The original structure of the facade can no longer be reconstructed. Only the portals are preserved.
