Abbeville Southern Railway

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Abbeville Southern Railway was a railway company in Alabama ( United States ). They operated the 42 kilometer long Grimes – Abbeville railway .

history

The railway company was founded on September 27, 1892 and connected the place Abbeville to the already existing main line of the Alabama Midland Railway from Dothan to Montgomery . The line went into operation on December 1, 1893. The Alabama Midland, which in turn belonged to the Plant System , was responsible for the management . The locomotive that was mainly used on the line, however, belonged to the Abbeville Southern. The accounts of the companies were administered separately, so that Abbeville Southern was formally independent and submitted its own annual reports. The official length of the route was given throughout these annual reports as 26.07 miles (41.96 km). In the business year 1896/97, the railway carried 6,638 passengers.

Passenger traffic was sparse, only a daily mixed pair of trains was offered in 1895.

On September 2, 1901, the railway company merged with the Savannah, Florida and Western Railroad within the Plant System and ceased to exist. The route is now operated by the Bay Line Railroad .
