Discard

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

When the load securing equipment and slings are discarded, this means that specified wear characteristics have been achieved and the securing equipment may therefore no longer be used. Discarding is a technical term in load securing and slinging technology that is used for securing devices that have no expiry date but can be used until the wear limits described in DIN EN 12195 2-4 have been reached. DIN EN 12195 is the Europe-wide standard for securing loads.

The discard occurs through:

  • For tensioning straps : yarn breaks or cuts of more than 10%, damage to the connections (seams), deformation due to the influence of heat, missing or illegible identification label, damage due to the effects of aggressive chemicals (according to DIN EN 12195-2 "Lashing straps made of synthetic fibers")
  • in the case of ratchets : breaks, cracks, considerable corrosion, deformation of the slotted shaft
  • for lashing chains : decrease in the thickness of a chain link by more than 10% of the nominal thickness, elongation of a chain link by more than 5% of the pitch (according to DIN EN 12195-3 "lashing chains")
  • For lashing wire ropes : particularly heavy wear due to abrasion of more than 10% of the thickness, damage to a ferrule / splice, severe wire breakage, severe rust formation, kinks and kinks, bruises in which the rope is flattened by more than 15%. The use of wire rope clips, also known as frogs, is prohibited and also leads to immediate discard (in accordance with DIN EN 12195-4 "lashing wire ropes").
  • Shackles and quick-connect links must be withdrawn from further use immediately if they have the following defects: restriction of function, deformation of the structure, damage to the surface
