The "Joachim Blankenburg" disappeared on February 21, 1944 during a flight between Thessaloniki and Athens off the Greek island of Evia .

The Joachim Blankenburg , a Junkers Ju 52 / 3m of Deutsche Lufthansa , serial number 6561, took off at 16:20 local time from Thessaloniki airport with the destination Athens . After a flight time of 41 minutes, the pilots reported that they wanted to return to Thessaloniki . At 5:06 p.m., the pilots radioed that they had engine problems and had sunk to a height of 30 meters. At around 5:10 p.m. in Thessaloniki, an emergency report was received from the aircraft with the content “engine stopped”. That was the last radio message that one received from Joachim Blankenburg . The Ju-52 probably crashed into the sea; all 16 inmates are considered missing. The wreck was never found.
