Abwab ( Arabic أبواب, DMG Abwāb  'Doors') is an Arabic-language German monthly newspaper from Cologne . The newspaper is published by New German Media Ltd. with the support of the Ara Pacis Initiative. Abwab currently has a print run of 60,000 and is distributed nationwide free of charge. The target group are refugees from Arabic-speaking countries such as Syria, Iraq, Tunisia and Morocco.

founding

One of the founders and editor-in-chief of Abwab is the Syrian-Palestinian writer Ramy Al-Asheq. He was imprisoned in Syria and Jordan in 2011 for participating in the Syrian Revolution. He came to Cologne in 2014 on a scholarship from the Heinrich Böll Foundation , where he wrote a. a. for the Kölner Stadtanzeiger and the floodlight . He has been the editor-in-chief of Abwab since December 2015 .

Abwab's reporting focuses on news from Germany, the Middle East and the rest of the world. There are also topics such as democracy, the rule of law, human rights and feminism. There are also reports and interviews from the areas of culture, society and everyday life in Germany. Selected articles are published in German on the last two pages.

The publisher New German Media Ltd. is a subsidiary of the New European Media group. This has been producing newspapers for migrants in Europe since 2001. Abwab is currently financed by advertising and donations. The journalists involved work on a voluntary basis.
