Accent (magazine)

Accent was a Dutch weekly political magazine with editorial offices in Amsterdam .

history

In October 1967 the entrepreneur GDJ Franken and the retired Vice-Admiral LH Reeser founded the company NV De Lage Landen as the future publisher of Accent . Franks had a stake in the company with 249,000 and Reeser with 1,000 guilders . The latter also became director of the company and announced a magazine that was uninfluenced by political, religious and social currents.

The first edition appeared on March 2, 1968 under the first editor-in-chief, Cees Bauer, previously at Elsevier . The first year was extremely sluggish, of the 50,000 print run not even 15,000 could be sold. The situation improved somewhat in the period that followed, but before the circulation of the paper fluctuated around 40,000–50,000 copies between 1971 and 1976, Director Reeser had already resigned on January 1, 1970.

After Reeser's resignation, Accent turned politically to the newly founded Democratic Socialists '70 , which was expressed in the fact that well-known supporters of the party were increasingly given space for their views. Despite this orientation, the magazine lacked a distinctive profile, and even five years after it was founded, no profits were made. At the beginning of May 1974, Accent was finally taken over by the Telegraaf group, whereupon some of the authors close to the DS'70 stopped working. Editor-in-chief Bauer finally resigned on July 1, 1974.

Bauer's successor, Hans Knoop, followed on from the work of his predecessor and landed a coup in 1976 when he followed the fugitive war criminal Pieter Menten to Switzerland, where he was arrested in December of that year. This brought Accent a week-long high circulation flight, which at that time led well over the 100,000 mark. After that, however, the sheet fell back into its old honesty, Knoop finally left Accent in October 1977. The time of his successor Edo Brandt was short-lived, even a circulation of over 87,000 copies in 1978 could no longer save the sheet from being discontinued last issue appeared on August 26, 1978.
