al-Akhtal
Ghiyāth b. Ghawth b. as-Salt b. at-Tariqa at-Taghlibi ( Arabic غياث بن غوث بن الصلت بن طارقة التغلبي, DMG Ġiyāṯ b. Ġauṯ b. aṣ-Ṣalt b. Ṭāriqa at-Taġlibī ; * around 640 in al-Hira or in Resafa ), known as al-Akhtal , Arabicالأخطل / al-Aḫṭal , was a 7th century Arab poet.
Al-Akhtal belonged on the paternal ( Taghlib ) and maternal ( Iyâd ) side of Christian tribes. His tribal mate Kaʿb b. Juʿail introduced it to Prince Yazid . Thus began the political activity of al-Akhtal, whose poetic talent was used against the Ansār under Muʿāwiya . Al-Akhtal, along with Jarir and al-Farazdaq, is considered one of the best poets of the first two centuries of Islam.
Al-Akhtal died around 710.
