Act Prohibiting Importation of Slaves (1807)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Act Prohibiting Importation of Slaves is a federal law passed by the United States in 1807 that stipulated that no new slaves could be imported into the United States. It took effect on January 1, 1808, the earliest date allowed by the then United States Constitution .

The law ended the legality of the US-based transatlantic slave trade .

It was not always enforced everywhere in the vast country; the slavery in the United States went on until the end of the Civil War (1861 to 1865) and the addition of the 13th Amendment to the Constitution of the 1865th

Almost at the same time as the Prohibiting Importation of Slaves Act, the British Parliament passed the Slave Trade Act 1807 after many years of discussion .
