The Adalbertkirche is a former Roman Catholic church in Kaliningrad .

history

The Adalbert Chapel in the Amalienau district of Königsberg was built in 1904 as a brick building with a west tower in a neo-Gothic style according to plans by the architect Friedrich Heitmann . In 1932 it was expanded to become the Church of St. Adalbert.

The patronage commemorates St. Adalbert of Prague , messenger of faith among the Prussians and martyrs on the Frischen Haff .

In 1938/39, the sculptor Otto Zirnbauer , who was then active in Dresden, created a 2.20 meter high protective cloak made of limewood for the Adalbert Church and an evangelist symbol made of Solnhofer slate (1.40 × 1 m) for the pulpit . As far as is known, the works were destroyed during or after the war.

The church was slightly damaged during World War II . Then the extension was demolished and a manufacturing plant was set up in the remaining old building of the chapel. In 1975 the interior was divided into three floors and used as an ionosphere research institute until 2018 .

After the research institute moved out, the listed building is currently (2020) being prepared for a new sacred use by the Russian Orthodox Church . The original church interior is restored and the original tower roof is reconstructed, removing the floor plan.
