Adil Shah Suri († April 1557) was the fourth ruler and last ruler of the united Sur Empire. The Surid dynasty was in power competition with the Mughal empire around the middle of the 16th century .

biography

Muhammad Adil Shah Suri was born Mubariz Khan. Only when he succeeded the throne of the Suri dynasty in November 1554 did he take the name Muhammad ʿAdil Shāh Sūrī. His father Nizam Khan was the younger brother of Sher Shah Suri , making himself a nephew of the founder of the dynasty. Mubariz Khan / Muhammad Adil Shah Suri had three sisters, one of whom was married to Islam Khan, one further to Sikandar Khan and the third to Ibrahim Khan. After the death of Islam Khan, they all and a few other Suri princes fought for power in the empire. In Bengal, his general and chief minister, Hemu , was able to enforce Adil Shah's claims against the renegade governor of Bengal , Muhammad Khan Suri, who was killed in battle in December 1555. But as early as April 1557 Muhammad Adil Shah himself fell in a field battle against Muhammad Khan's son, who as Ghiyasuddin Bahadur Shah II had risen to become the independent ruler of Bengal. Muhammad Adil Shah is not to be confused with the older son of Sher Shah Sur, Adil Khan Suri, who had long fought over rule with his younger brother Islam Khan.
