Adolf Loning

Adolf Loning was a German officer in the Spanish army and the author of a description of the classes, customs and traditions in Spain from 1830-1840, which is still important today .

Life

Loning writes that he was a captain in the Spanish army and a knight of the military order of St. Ferdinand. He traveled to Spain in early 1830 and in the summer of 1834 he joined the Carlist army under the leadership of Tomás de Zumalacárregui . "I was the first German who came to this camp" . Loning fought in the bloody clashes of Alegría de Álava and Venta de Echavarri on October 27 and 28, 1834 and was wounded in the Battle of Mendigorria (July 16, 1835) as a fighter in the Guias Battalion of Navarre . In the Expedición Real campaign , he received command of the 4th Company of the Foreign Battalion after the battle of Barbastro (July 2, 1837). After his excellent participation in the Battle of Villar de los Navarros (August 24, 1837), he was made captain. During the Battle of Peñacerrada (June 20-22, 1838) he held the Urizarra bastion . He says little more about himself.

Other Germans who fought for the Carlist in Spain were Goeben, Felix Fürst Lichnowsky and Rahden.
