Aedes leucomelas ( synonym Ochlerotatus leucomelas ) is a two-winged species ofthe mosquito family (Culicidae). Within the collective genus Aedes , Aedes leucomelas belongs to the subgenus Ochlerotatus .

features

The mosquitoes are five to six millimeters long. The sides of the thorax are strongly scaled, and the proboscis is also brightly scaled. The mesonotum has golden, shiny beige scales in the middle. The legs are not curled, the tergites are broadly banded. As with many other Ochlerotatus species, the males have strongly feathered antennae and long hairy distal palpebral limbs .

Occurrence and way of life

The animals are common all over Europe. They inhabit open meadows and forest edges. They fly in spring.

Systematics

Aedes leucomelas belongs to the subgenus Ochlerotatus within the genus Aedes . Ochlerotatus was separated from the genus Aedes by John F. Reinert in 2000 , but was reunited with it by other authors in 2015. The group of mosquitoes, which previously belonged to the genus Ochlerotatus , is now placed in the subgenus of the same name.
