As Aerarier is known in ancient times (corresponding to Aerarium ) an unspecified known class of citizens during the period of the Roman Republic , made pursuant to a higher tax burden suggest.

The censors could turn every citizen into an aerarian and thus impose a "penalty tax" on him.
