Africa Awards for Entrepreneurship

Africa Awards for Entrepreneurship (AAE) is a competition sponsored by the African Leadership Network (ALN), which has been running since 2007 and is endowed with 200,000 US dollars . The award is given to companies or institutions based in an African country that stand out due to special innovation or special social commitment.

The company is sponsored by the philanthropic company Omidyar Network, founded in 2004 by eBay founder Pierre Omidyar . With its support, more than $ 290 million in funding has been exchanged between for- profit companies and non-profit organizations in the first seven years, promoting economic progress and individual participation across multiple investment areas, including microfinance, property rights, government transparency and social media is made possible. Price categories

The prizes are awarded in five categories:

  • Lifetime Achievement Award Honoring a company's lifetime achievement and its corporate culture .
  • Transformational Business Award . Honoring distinguished business leaders who have made a significant socio-economic impact in Africa by building businesses with sales of more than $ 50 million. Awarded in 2013 to Interswitch Limited, Nigeria , for the establishment of financial services between governments, banks and other entities cooperating with them
  • Outstanding Mature Business Award , a $ 100,000 award for a business leader who has built a company with revenues between $ 5 million and $ 50 million.
  • Outstanding Small and Growing Business Award . $ 50,000 for a remarkable young African company with sales between $ 500,000 and $ 5M.
  • Outstanding Social Entrepreneur Award . The $ 50,000 prize goes to an organization that has made a special contribution to the socio-economic development of low-income communities in Africa. To be eligible, the organization, structured as a non-profit or for-profit organization, must be founded or currently running by an African citizen and have annual sales between $ 150,000 and $ 2.5 million in the most recent fiscal year. The focus on social returns is particularly important.
