The Africa Rice Center (also AfricaRice ) is an internationally active research institute that aims to fight poverty and strengthen food security by improving the productivity and profitability of the rice sector in Africa . It was founded in 1971 under the name West Africa Rice Development Association ( WARDA ) and is one of the 15 institutes of the Consultative Group on International Agricultural Research . At the same time, AfricaRice is an autonomous research institution of 24 African member states. The head office is in Abidjan , further locations are in Senegal , Nigeria , Tanzania and Benin .

NERICA is the best known product from AfricaRice.
