Agence nationale de renseignements

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The Agence nationale de renseignements (ANR) is the intelligence service of the Democratic Republic of the Congo . The agency's role is to ensure the internal and external security of the state.

ANR was set up in early 1997 as the intelligence service of the Alliance des Forces démocratiques pour la Liberation du Congo (AFDL). In May 1997, the agency integrated the premises of the former Service national d'intelligence et de protection (SNIP), which had been renamed Direction générale de la sûreté nationale (DGSN) in 1996. In October 2002, Georges Leta Mangasa , the head of the ANR, was sentenced to death with others in the Laurent-Désiré Kabila murder trial. Previously, in 2001, the Acting President, Joseph Kabila , appointed Kazadi Nyembwe as head of the ANR. The agency has been heavily criticized by various organizations for its disregard for human rights.
