The Agencia Española de Protección de Datos (abbreviation AEPD ) is the national data protection authority of Spain . It has existed since 1994 and is based in Madrid . In addition, the autonomous communities of Madrid , Catalonia and the Basque Country have their own data protection authorities independent of the AEPD.

The AEPD is a public corporation that acts independently of instructions from the government. From 2007 to mid-June 2011, its director was Artemi Rallo Lombarte , who also represents Spain in the Article 29 data protection group of the European Union , and subsequently José Luis Rodríguez Álvarez .

The AEPD monitors compliance with data protection regulations both in government agencies and in the private sector. Her tasks include handling complaints, imposing fines for violations of data protection regulations, recommendations on legislative projects and the preparation of an annual data protection report.
