The Agreement Between the United States and the Republic of Iceland, May 5, 1951 or 1951 Agreement is a treaty under international law between the United States and Iceland , which was signed in Reykjavík on May 5, 1951 .

The 1951 Agreement has a preamble that describes the situation in Iceland and outlines the intentions between the United States and Iceland. Article I-III states that the US will take precautions to defend Iceland. Iceland, on the other hand, will provide facilities and land so that the US can take these precautions. The use of these facilities by the military is regulated with Iceland. Article IV states that Iceland must agree to the number of troops. Article V states that the USA regulates responsibility in such a way that this leads to the maximum safety of the Icelandic people. Article VI stipulates that the Agreement of October 7, 1946, between the United States and Iceland for interim use of Keflavik Airport will be repealed as soon as the 1951 Agreement comes into force and the parties agree to use Keflavik Airport . Article VII regulates the termination of the contract and Article VIII regulates when the contract comes into force.

Further development

The 1951 Agreement was in full force until 2006, when US troops were withdrawn. The contract was then expanded to include the Agreement Regarding the Withdrawal of US Forces from and the Return to Iceland of Certain Agreed Areas and Facilities in Iceland .
