The Ahmadu Bello University (ABU) is the second largest university in Nigeria . It is located in Zaria and was founded in 1962 as the University of Northern Nigeria . The university was named after the Caliph of Sokoto , Sardauna Ahmadu Bello , the first prime minister of northern Nigeria.

In 2012, there were around 49,436 enrolled students and 736 teachers, including 236 professors. Although ABU had an admission quota of 6,080 students in 2010/2011, only 3,612 students were admitted, out of 89,760 applicants.

The ABU maintains a university clinic, which is also one of the largest clinics in Nigeria. It was set up primarily for the socially underprivileged who cannot pay the relatively high health costs.

The nuclear research reactor NIRR-1 (Nigeria Research Reactor 1) is located on the ABU site . The 31 kW light water reactor was put into operation in February 2004 with the help of the “China Institute of Atomic Energy”.

Former United Nations Under-Secretary-General for Political Affairs, Ibrahim Gambari , was formerly Chairman of the Political Science Department at Ahmadu Bello University.
