Airbag protection

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

An airbag protector is an aid to help in traffic accidents . It serves to protect accident victims and emergency services from the consequences of an uncontrolled deployment of an airbag . The force of a deploying airbag can lead to serious, in the worst case fatal, injuries.

background

One or more airbags can be found in almost every modern vehicle. In the event of an accident, they can be a danger for accident victims and rescuers, because there is a risk that airbags z. B. trigger suddenly during rescue work with the hydraulic rescue kit. The airbag protection serves to minimize this risk, at least as far as the driver and passenger airbags are concerned.

functionality

The airbag protection consists of a stable net made of heavy-duty textile material. The net is pulled over the steering wheel and lashed behind it. If the airbag is triggered, the airbag protection prevents the airbag from inflating. Airbag protection devices are also available for the front passenger airbag, although it is more difficult to secure them in the vehicle. Other models consist of circular plates in which steel spikes are anchored. When the airbag is inflated, it is perforated at these steel tips and cannot inflate any further. Equipment to protect the emergency services from airbags is controversial in specialist circles, since it is impossible to secure all airbags in modern vehicles and relative safety can also be achieved by maintaining a safety distance between airbags (see also the AIRBAG rule ).
