Akahata ( Japanese し ん ぶ ん 赤 旗 , Shimbun Akahata, German "Newspaper Red Flag") is the organ of the Communist Party of Japan in the form of a national newspaper. It was founded in 1928 and currently has both daily and weekly editions.
history
Akahata is the oldest party newspaper in Japan. It was founded in 1928 and was then called "Sekki" - that is the Sino-Japanese reading of the characters for "Akahata". The newspaper has had this new reading since 1946.
The newspaper could not appear between 1935 and 1945 under the increasingly conservative government and then during the Korean War , only afterwards again in 1952. In 1959 a Sunday edition was added and the newspaper began to cover more general subjects. With a circulation of 3 million, the newspaper has a significant influence on public opinion.
