Briefcase (Windows)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The briefcase ( English Briefcase ) is a special directory in Microsoft Windows from Windows 95 to Windows 10 in 1607 ( Anniversary Update ) that a simple file synchronization with a removable media (eg. As a floppy disk) or a network drive enabled. It was primarily intended for portable computers. Like the recycle bin and other folders, it was part of the new desktop interface introduced with Windows 95 and was intended to represent the workplace metaphor.

The briefcase was originally only installed by default if the “laptop” option was selected during installation; it could not be reinstalled, so Windows 95 had to be completely reinstalled. As of Windows 95 OSR2, the briefcase can also be installed in an existing system. All later versions of Windows included the briefcase unchanged.

With Windows 8 , the briefcase was removed from the context menu, but it could be restored with a simple change in the registry . Windows 10 no longer includes a briefcase. It could be installed up to Build 14942 (Creators Update). Subsequent installation is no longer possible. The successor is the service for the synchronization of offline objects, available since Windows 2000 .
