al-Futaisi ( Arabic الفطيسي, DMG al-Fuṭaisī ) is a 35.22 km² island about eight kilometers southwest of Abu Dhabi .
Most of the island, which is ten kilometers long and five kilometers wide, consists of a nature reserve, but there is also a holiday resort dedicated to ecotourism on Futaisi.
The original settlement of Futaisi dates back several hundred years, which was proven by the discovery of old wells, an ancient mosque and a burial place. The island has a very diverse for the region flora and fauna, among others are gazelle , dugongs , ospreys and Uromasticinae on and around Futaisi. The island does not have any sources of drinking water today, but 22 ancient wells have been discovered so far.
Futaisi is not connected to the mainland by bridges, but has a small airfield and a boat dock.
A special feature was a system of canals in the south of the island, which resulted in the word "HAMAD" in Latin letters. The individual letters were almost 500 meters high, the channel width was 44 meters and the total width of the writing extended over 1700 meters, so that the word could be read from a great height and on satellite images (e.g. Google Maps). Both the reason for the construction of the canal system and its sudden disappearance are unknown.
