al-Hasan ibn Sulayman Abu'l-Mawahib

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Al-Hasan ibn Sulaiman Abu'l-Mawahib ( al-Hasan ibn Sulaiman, the father of gifts , also often referred to as al-Hasan ibn Sulaiman ) was a sultan of Kilwa who ruled from 1310 to 1333.

Under al-Hasan ibn Sulaiman Abu'l-Mawahib, who belonged to the Mahdali dynasty, the East African port city of Kilwa experienced its greatest heyday. The Sultan was the builder of a magnificent palace complex outside the city ( Husuni Kubwa ) and he built the great mosque of Kilwa. This construction activity is possibly connected with a successful trip to Mecca , where he saw numerous important buildings and wanted to have them in his capital. Al-Hasan ibn Sulayman is also known from his coinage, on which he also describes himself as the victorious king and later chronicles, but above all he became famous through Ibn Battuta , who stayed at the court of the Sultan in 1331 and reported on his splendor and wealth. He also tells of the sultan's generosity, which earned him the nickname Father of Gifts .
