The non-governmental organization “Light and Hope” (Al-Nour Wal Amal) was founded in Egypt as early as 1954 to enable blind girls and women to get an education and thus social integration; it also runs schools. The music institute is located in the Cairo suburb of Heliopolis (district) , which was run as part of the NGO from 1961 and integrated schoolgirls from the age of eight into a youth orchestra after a test until they were transferred to the adult orchestra.

The orchestra had toured 26 countries up until 2018.
