Sterna Island is a small island off the Graham Coast of Graham Land in the north of the Antarctic Peninsula . It is located 1.1 km north of Darboux Island .
Participants of the British Graham Land Expedition (1934-1937) led by the Australian polar explorer John Rymill mapped them. The UK Antarctic Place-Names Committee named it in 1959 after the antipodean tern ( Sterna vittata ) which breeds here in large numbers .
