German Panzer Grenadiers as an alarm post

Alarm post is the military term for soldiers who are tasked with alerting their own troops in the event of danger. If nothing else is ordered, the alarm post defends itself. Alarm posts are identified either with a number, after a point in the area or with an alias. As a rule, two soldiers are used as alarm posts, with one soldier being assigned as the alarm post leader. If the distance to the troops is greater, if visibility is restricted (night or fog) or if the alarm post also has to carry out personal or vehicle checks, double posts are used as alarm posts.

In addition to the actual job, the alarm post can, in exceptional cases, also take on tasks as an ABC alarm post . Each troop has to secure itself at any time and in any place, for which in most cases an alarm post is assigned to each group (an average of 12-15 men). The time for an alarm post is between 30 minutes and up to 3 hours, depending on the weather, double watches are part of everyday life.

The soldiers of an alarm post receive a special order that defines the location, their tasks and, above all, how to carry out the alarm.

The alarm post command regulates

  • the observation area and indicates the location of positions of the own and neighboring troops,
  • whether their own troops are in front of them,
  • how and for which incidents the alarm post should alert and how he should behave after the alarm (evasive action, start a fight, possibly from which line),
  • when the soldiers of the alarm post will be relieved.

The soldiers of the alarm post inform the reliever and all superiors, without being asked, of all observations since the beginning of the order. The transfer call will be carried out according to the schedule.

For the wealth of information that must be flawlessly transferred to the detachment, soldiers use the mnemonic LANGEMARK ( L age, A uftrag, N achbarn, G limit, E röffnungslinie of Fire, M essage / alerting, A B solution, R ückwärtiger room , K ennwort / slogan) or LANGEMAPP ( L age, A uftrag, N achbarn, G narrow, e röffnungslinie, M essage / alerting, A B solution, P Arole / password P latz the group leader).

Alarm guards are usually given additional equipment to help them complete their mission. Binoculars ( binoculars ), signal pistols and additional weapons such as machine guns or grenade pistols , hand grenades , rarely anti-tank weapons , radio and night vision devices are also possible .
