The Alas-Chiricanas Flight 901 was a domestic Panamanian regional flight from Colon to Panama City , a machine of the type on the night of July 19, 1994 Embraer EMB 110 Bandeirante exploded immediately after the start. All 21 people on board, including 12 Jews , were killed in the accident. Both Panamanian and US authorities view the event as an unsolved crime and act of terrorism .

With 21 deaths, it was the most serious aircraft accident to date, involving an Embraer EMB 110, until a completely overcrowded plane crashed in the Amazon region in 2009 .

machine

The aircraft concerned was an Embraer EMB-110P1 Bandeirante built in 1981 with the serial number 110375. The aircraft had the aircraft registration number HP-1202AC . The twin-engine regional airliner was with two turboprop engines of the type Pratt & Whitney Canada PT6A-34 equipped and approved for 21 people. The Alas Chiricanas had been using the machine since December 5, 1991.

the accident

The incident happened during the night. For the regional flight from Colón to Panama City, 18 passengers were seated in the plane, including 12 Jewish business people. The crew consisted of a master, a first officer and a flight attendant. Shortly after taking off from Colón airport, the plane exploded in midair. The debris of the Embraer fell in the Santa Rita Mountains near Colón. Panamanian investigators were able to determine the cause of the accident shortly after starting their investigation. The bomb was believed to have been brought on board by a suicide bomber.

Originator

A man by the name of Ali Hawa Jamal is suspected to be the perpetrator. Lya was the only victim whose relatives did not come forward to release his body for burial. Officials suspected that the incident was an anti-Semitic act of terror by Hezbollah as it occurred just one day after the AMIA bombing in Buenos Aires . They assumed that the perpetrator wanted to express his support for "Ansar Allah", a South American offshoot of Hezbollah.

New findings 2018

In 2018, Juan Carlos Varela , President of Panama, said that recent evidence and intelligence reports "clearly indicate that it was a terrorist attack". Varela said he wanted to instruct local and international authorities to reopen the investigation.
