Life

Like his father Ioan Teodor Callimachi, he was considered wise and had a meek character. Callimachi had to increase the wine tax ("vădrărit") due to the constantly growing demands of the Ottomans . Tired of his rule, he demanded his redemption three times from the Sublime Porte , which was finally granted to him in 1799. He spent the rest of his life in Istanbul .

The old university in Iași was called the Callimachi Palace as the former seat of the ruler . Originally it was the apartment of the treasurer Ion Cantacuzino, which was later offered to Prince Alexandru Callimachi.
