General Reading Society Basel
The Allgemeine Lesegesellschaft Basel (ALG) is a reading society in the Swiss city of Basel and today has over 1000 members.
history
The reading society was founded in 1787 and already had prominent members with Peter Ochs as the first governor. Since 1832 the company has been located on Münsterplatz in the former canon house, which was then extensively renovated in the neo-Gothic style. The plans for the renovation came from Johann Friedrich Huber , the locksmith work was carried out by Heinrich Ludwig Schlöth .
The ALG now houses, among other things, an open access library with over 75,000 volumes.
