General Association of Rabbis in Germany

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The General Rabbi Association in Germany was one of the umbrella associations of rabbis in Germany . It existed from 1884 (initially as the Association of Rabbis in Germany ) until 1938.

history

In 1884, on the initiative of non- Orthodox rabbis, the Association of Rabbis in Germany was founded as a professional association of community rabbis . In 1896 it was renamed the General Rabbi Association in Germany . The name change was intended to make it clear that it was open to rabbis of all directions. In order to maintain “religious neutrality”, the discussion of halachic questions in the association's bodies was excluded by statute. However, it was precisely this attempt to merge into a general association that led to competing foundations in response:

  • In 1897 the Association of Traditionally Law-Abiding Rabbis in Germany was founded . However, it allowed its members to join the General Rabbis Association at the same time .
  • The liberal rabbis in turn founded the Association of Liberal Rabbis in Germany in 1898 .
  • Some Orthodox rabbis took offense at the general openness of the Association of Traditionally Law-Abiding Rabbis in Germany to the General Rabbi Association . Therefore, as the second association of Orthodox German rabbis, they founded the Orthodox Rabbis Association in 1907 , which rejected any cooperation with the General Rabbis Association .

The General Rabbis Association in Germany had around 180 members around 1930. Rabbi Leo Baeck had been the chairman of the association since 1922. Like almost all Jewish organizations, the association was dissolved after the November pogrom in 1938 .

Purpose of the association

As the purpose of the association, the statutes determined the "enhancement of the religious meaning and life in Judaism, preservation of the honor of Judaism and the dignity and reputation of the rabbinical state, promotion of the members in academic and official activities".
