Alonso de Arellano

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Alonso de Arellano was a 16th century Spanish navigator .

In 1559 he and Andrés de Urdaneta were in the retinue of Miguel López de Legazpi , who was commissioned by King Philip II to explore a route from East Asia to America. For this purpose, the fleet first set out on November 21, 1564 in La Navidad ( Mexico ) to establish the first Spanish base in Cebu in the Philippines . There Arellano deserted with his ship, the San Lucas , and made his way back alone. At the same time (on June 1, 1565) Legazpi also sent his navigator Urdaneta on the return journey to Mexico. But since this was driven far north by storms, it was Arellano who was the first to arrive back in La Navidad . Urdaneta only completed the crossing about three months later, but landed in Acapulco .

Since Urdaneta brought the more detailed records of the route taken with him, he had the honor of exploring the Pacific route from Asia to Mexico for a long time .

After his return, Arellano was tried on the basis of Urdaneta's statements about his desertion in Spain.
