Alpha (magazine)

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

alpha (full title alpha - mathematical student magazine ) was a mathematical magazine for students published by the publishing house Volk und Wissen in the GDR . Its first issue appeared in 1967. There were six issues a year. For the first twenty years, the editor-in-chief of the over fifteen-strong editorial board was the Leipzig mathematics teacher Johannes Lehmann (1922–1995). The circulation was at times just under 100,000.

The articles in the 32-page booklet, which went beyond the subject matter and were intended to arouse interest in mathematics, came from teachers, university lecturers and scientists and dealt with mathematical methods and tasks, scientific topics with a mathematical background, biographies, etc. They were each marked the grade from which they were suitable.

In addition, there were some pages on the alpha competition. Around six tasks from the fields of mathematics , physics and chemistry were published per grade level . Participants were able to solve tasks from their grade level or higher grade levels. Adults solved problems in grade 11/12. Submitted solutions were rated “very well solved”, “well solved” or “solved”. At the end of the competition, all solution cards were sent in to receive the alpha badge in gold, silver or bronze. Lists appeared in the magazine, showing how many years a student had already successfully participated in the competition.

In 1991 Friedrich Verlag took over the publication and in 1998 Reinhardt Becker Verlag, Velten. From 1994 to 1998 the magazine had the addition “Mathematics as a Hobby” in the title. In 2001 it was discontinued.
