Old tannery

history

The Gerber craft belonged in the past to the economic foundations of the city Ohrdruf. The tanners carried out their craft in the tanneries on Löwengasse or Löbersgasse and on the adjacent bank of the Ohra. In the 16th century there were over 20 tanneries in Ohrdruf.

In the 20th century, the transition to machine tanning was also made in Ohrdruf, the traditional tanneries and red tanneries were then forced to give up their craft under the intensifying market and production conditions.

Out of the desire to be able to present the handicrafts that are important for the city's history and the region for interested visitors, the house at Löberstraße 2 with the workshop equipment of the last Ohrdrufer master tanner Manfred John was designated as a technical monument. In 2006 a museum association was also founded with the aim of restoring the old tanner's house. As a result of this project, a second step has been taken to set up the old tannery technology museum . Demonstrations are shown on weekends.
